Overview

AGR Renewables has successfully completed the sale of its Burwell Solar project to EDF Renewables, marking a significant milestone in the company’s development and investment strategy. The project, located in East Cambridgeshire, was sold at the ready-to-build (RTB) stage, highlighting AGR’s capability to originate, develop, and deliver high-quality renewable energy assets to market.

For AGR, the transaction reinforces its position as a leading UK-based renewable energy developer, demonstrating its ability to create projects that meet the technical, environmental, and commercial standards required by major institutional investors and utilities.

The Burwell Solar project represents a major utility-scale development, with a total installed capacity of approximately 60MW of solar generation alongside a co-located 10MW battery energy storage system (BESS). EDF Renewables’ acquisition forms part of its broader ambition to expand its UK renewable portfolio and accelerate the transition to low-carbon energy systems.

Environmental Impact

The Burwell Solar development spans approximately 80 hectares and is designed to generate enough clean electricity to power nearly 10,000 homes annually. By integrating a 10MW battery storage system, the project goes beyond traditional solar generation, enabling energy to be stored and dispatched when demand is highest, while also supporting grid stability and resilience.

In addition to its energy contribution, the project has been carefully designed to deliver meaningful environmental and ecological benefits. Planned biodiversity enhancements include the creation of new wildlife habitats, planting of native hedgerows, and the establishment of reedbeds and ecological corridors. These measures aim to ensure that the site not only generates renewable energy but also improves local ecosystems and supports long-term environmental sustainability.

The project is also expected to reduce carbon emissions significantly, contributing to the UK’s legally binding net-zero targets. By displacing fossil fuel-based electricity generation, Burwell Solar will play a role in lowering greenhouse gas emissions while strengthening the country’s renewable energy infrastructure.

“We are immensely proud of our ambitious initiative which cements AGR’s entrance into UK’s sustainable agriculture sector with one of the largest projects in the nation. The project highlights the synergies between energy and agriculture and supports UK’s ambition towards food security and transition to net-zero.”

The transaction reflects a growing trend in the UK energy market: strong demand for fully consented, ready-to-build renewable projects. Developers like AGR play a key role in progressing projects through early-stage risk, enabling major investors such as EDF Renewables to efficiently deploy capital and accelerate the expansion of clean energy capacity.

Economic Value & Industry Significance

The Burwell Solar project is set to generate meaningful economic and social benefits alongside its environmental impact. Throughout construction and operation, it will create jobs and support local contractors and supply chains, contributing to regional economic growth.

Engagement with the local community has been central to the project’s development. Initiatives such as community benefit funds and continued collaboration with stakeholders are designed to ensure the project delivers lasting value to the surrounding area and fosters strong public support for renewable energy infrastructure.
