AGR Renewables is delighted to announce the sale of its 60MW Burwell Solar project located in East Cambridgeshire, UK, at ready-to-build (RTB) stage to EDF Renewables. The project represents a key milestone in AGR’s development portfolio and reflects the successful progression of a high-quality renewable energy asset through to construction readiness.

The Burwell Solar project comprises a 60MW ground-mounted solar installation integrated with a 10MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), marking AGR’s first project of this type. Construction is expected to commence in Q3 2021, with full operational status anticipated in Q4 2022. Once complete, the 80-hectare site is designed to generate clean electricity to power approximately 9,800 households. The inclusion of battery storage will enable excess energy to be stored and dispatched when demand is highest, while also providing valuable grid stability services to National Grid.

The project will contribute to the long-term reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by avoiding approximately 21,641 tonnes of CO₂ each year, supporting the United Kingdom’s commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2050.

Alongside its environmental benefits, AGR and EDF are committed to delivering positive outcomes for the local community. During both the construction and operational phases, the project is expected to generate employment opportunities and provide a boost to the local economy through increased activity and use of regional contractors and suppliers.

The scheme also delivers significant biodiversity gains and habitat improvements, while allowing continued agricultural use of the land through controlled sheep grazing. Environmental enhancements include the creation of wildlife corridors, the planting of over 1.8 kilometres of new hedgerows, and the establishment of more than 1.8 hectares of new reedbeds. In addition, the project includes a community benefit package for local councils, providing £20,000 per year to support local initiatives and causes. AGR Renewables acknowledges the support of the local community and relevant authorities throughout the planning process, which has been essential in enabling the project’s successful progression.

"The sale of Burwell Solar to EDF Renewables solidifies AGR’s position as one of UK’s forefront developers of large-scale solar projects. Our strong focus on connecting with local communities during the development and operation stages is a testament to our dedication towards social and environmental prosperity, something we feel strongly aligns with EDF’s vision and principles."
